A double barrel shotgun built on English gunmaker James Purdey's patent action combined with fellow English gunmaker Stephen Grant's side-lever sidelock, retailed by James W. Rosier. A high-grade gun, with nickle plated locks and profuse, ornate scroll engraving. Rosier's name appears engraved in a scrolling banner on the locks, a feature noted on only a few other examples.
A fine example of the engraver's art, with its tight English scrollwork and hunting vignettes, its retail by an Australian dealer reflects the demand and availability of fine quality English shotguns in Victoria during the late nineteenth century.
